Ashtanga Vinyasa

Discover the true roots of yoga & get closer to this art (& science) in its purist expression.

The origins of Ashtanga can be traced back to 200 B.C. when guru Patanjali began constructing his “ashta-ang”, or “eight-limbed” path that involves mental, physical & spiritual conditioning.

This form of yoga was then documented for the first time by yogi Sri Krishnamacharya & later developed as a “Mysore-style” tradition by one of his students, K. Pattabhi Jois.

Ashtanga Vinyasa classes at Intārya follow this traditional lineage of gurus Patanjali, Krishnamacharya & K. Pattabhi Jois, adopting the Mysore-style of teaching.

These classes build heat within the body, challenge your core strength, mobility & flexibility. You will work on body alignment & breath through controlled movement which involves holding postures over measured intervals to gain the real benefits of this practice.

Ashtanga Vinyasa classes are suitable for students at all levels & are taught by instructor Sne daily, Monday to Friday.

In Sanskrit “Vi” means “in a special way” & “Nyasa” means ‘to place.’ Thus, “Vinyasa” can be translated as “to place in a special way.”

This particular style of yoga is known for its sequencing of asanas (postures) that flow consecutively in a rhythmic manner, coordinating movement with respiration. Each asana is linked to the next, creating an intentional breath-to-movement transcendent flow.

This sequential way of teaching is well suited to those looking to work on cardio & stamina.

At Intārya, Vinyasa Flow classes are the perfect way to obtain full body conditioning, to work up a sweat & to improve breath to movement synchrony.

Although postures & sequences are taught at a fairly fast pace, modifications are always available, making every class suitable for students at all stages of their yogic journey.

Each class is uniquely crafted by our instructors employing their own style & will often incorporate the use of music to offer a relaxing, motivating & enjoyable experience.

Vinyasa Flow classes are taught by instructors Sne, Emerson, Vanessa & Ryan, Monday to Sunday.

Vinyasa Flow

A woman practicing yoga indoors on a black mat, standing in a wide-legged forward bend with one arm reaching upward, near large windows with trees outside, in a bright room.

When broken down in Sanskrit, the word “ha” means “sun” & the word “ta” means “moon.” Hence, “Hatha” is symbolic of a form of yoga that is intended to bring balance between the “sun” & the “moon” (ie. the masculine & feminine energies) within the body.

With Hatha being known as the oldest form of yoga practice, the “Hatha Yoga Pradipika” dating back to the 15th century, is one of the most influential scriptures of this yogic practice. This text prescribes that Hatha yoga must include postures (asanas), breathwork (pranayama) & meditation (dhyana).

Following this teaching, Hatha yoga is led at Intārya as a "yoga of balance," placing a strong emphasis on static poses & breath management, together generating a meditative effect on the body & mind.

The benefits of Hatha Yoga include improved physical stamina, flexibility, balance & general body, mind & breath awareness. It is also a fantastic exercise for lowering stress levels, enhancing focus, and developing inner tranquillity.

Hatha classes at Intārya are suitable for students at all levels & are taught by instructors Sne & Emerson on Saturdays & some Sundays. See the bookings page on this website to learn more.

Whether you are simply looking to unplug, to connect with self or to prepare yourself for your journey in to motherhood, Intārya provides the perfect environment for a restorative yoga practice.

Restorative yoga is a restful practice that encourages you to slow down & relax through passive stretching. It is particularly helpful for those women who are expecting or for anyone struggling with stress or anxiety as it helps to regulate the nervous system.

Restorative yoga classes focus on postures that help “open up” certain areas of the body, such as the hips or shoulders/chest where you may be holding tension.

These classes involve holding only a few postures in one sitting, it is the quality of time spent in each posture that counts here, not the quantity of postures completed.

Nestled in the hills of Mill Valley, Intārya also provides students with a “retreat”-style experience after class. Here students can benefit from a personalized plant-based offering tailored to their individual needs, all in the midst of woodland nature where they can connect with other yogis in the community.

Restorative classes & trimester-by-trimester pre-natal development sessions are also led by Sne daily from Monday to Friday.
